To Define an Angel November 11, 2008
My battered old copy of The Concise Oxford Dictionary rarely leaves the sanctuary of its dusty be-cobwebbed place on my bookshelf. But in a recent moment of boredom I thought wouldn’t it be fun to see what the Oxford University Press thought of Angels Den? Even before I’d reached up to the top shelf to locate the shortened repository of all spelling knowledge I knew that “fun” was going to be a very tough thing to squeeze out of this experience. But hey, I was there anyway and I’d nothing better to do in that moment in time,, so I started the thumb through the pages…
ā’ngel (-nj-) n. 1. Divine attendant or messenger
Hmmm! Whilst it is true that some of our investor Angels at Angels Den have divine qualities the only message that they attend to bestow is whether or not your business or business idea has merit and a chance of succeeding with their help. If you’re imagining flowing white robes and haloes, you may very well be disappointed (these only come out on special occasions), because our angels are a little more down to Earth. They are successful individuals from all walks of life, work environments and locations around the globe. You would probably pass them in the street without so much as a second glance, but these are the men and women you will need to impress if you are looking for business funding through Angels Den. The one common thread between them is their desire to offer the right business their money – and sometimes their expertise – to catapult it to the next level for the profitable benefit of all parties concerned.
Děn n. wild beast’s lair
Now that’s not right at all. Our Angels are cute and cuddly, there’s nothing beastly about them at all. Ok, maybe somewhere between the two would be closer to the truth.
Entrepreneurs waiting to pitch to investor Angels at our speed-pitching events can often be seen wide-eyed and hyperventilating before their three minutes in the spotlight. The only advice we have for them is STAY CALM. Ok, so these may be the most important three minutes of their business lives, it could mean the difference between financial freedom and their business floundering on the rocks of misfortune and the humiliation may be too much to bear if they forget their pitch…where was I…oh yes, stay calm. Our Angel investors have taken time out of their very important lives especially to see you in the hope that you have a business that they can believe in. They have money burning a hole in their pockets and they are looking for you to give them any excuse to relieve them of it. Basically it is in their best interest to be nice to you, draw out of you exactly what is special about your business and why they should be interested, and not to give you a hard time.
Angels Den runs regular speed-pitching events around the UK, so if you have a business or business concept that could benefit from the funding and possibly also the experience of our Angel investors check out our website for when and where the next event is, and remember…stay calm!
