It’s Time To Help Ourselves

new business funding from Lord MandelsonNo, this isn’t a rant about the rising problem of inner-city shoplifting, nor is it about the moral issues surrounding looting in the aftermath of a natural disaster when governments and aid agencies fail miserably in the role they were created for. This is my rant about how the looming elections in the UK are likely to affect new business funding, and whether we can expect any help from this or any subsequent administration?

I’m sorry if this comes as a bit of a shock, but those involved in the political system are often more interested in themselves than they are in the constituents that they serve. I know, this is a lot to take onboard all at once, the notion that individuals in all political parties might put their own interests ahead of ours, but there it is, it’s out there now!

In the run-up to the elections much energy will be expended creating speeches and policies that the clever people behind the scenes believe will strike the right cord with us the public, so we’ll vote for them. Fortunes will be spent on TV adverts telling us that their policies are the best and why we should elect them. More research will be conducted than at any other time in the political calendar, although most of this will be spent looking into what we think rather than ways of improving our lives. So what this means is that not much will actually get done this side of the elections. After all, why would any self respecting politician be interested in helping ventures attain new business funding when their political skins are on the line? Surely their time would be better spent preparing speeches and discovering new and innovative ways of spinning stories to make them sound wonderful?

We need to face the uncomfortable fact that the Government is not going to help us, we’ve got to help ourselves when it comes to new business funding.

Ah yes, the coming months will be full of speeches about all the wonderful things that each party promises to do – should they be elected – to help us out of recession, to speed up the recovery, to secure the economic future of our great nation and to provide new business funding options for small businesses. We’re bound to hear time and time again about the importance of small businesses to the recovery of our economy, and the need for new business funding solutions. But how much of this pre-election rhetoric is just an opportunity to bamboozle the voting public into believing the virtues and dedications of politicians who have little or no prospect of following through on these promises?

So before we all get sucked into the traditional hope culture that grips us every time an election arises and convinces us that one party’s hollow promises are better than another’s, bear in mind that if your company is looking for new business funding, you’ll have to rely on your own ability to win investment because waiting around for political help will mean a very long wait indeed.
