No Bowler Hats North Of The Border – Week In Review
There have been calls for Scotland to have its very own stock exchange. Business Secretary Vince Cable has suggested that regional stockmarkets could help companies with a turnover of less than £10 million should encourage investors and Business Angels to support local enterprises. Now is it a good thing? Perhaps not? Brewin Dolphin are correct in that the purpose of a stock exchance is to aid liquidity of stock, if we look at the InvestBX online exchange, after £3m of public funding, it has a grand total of 3 listed businesses. Wouldn’t those businesses have been better served raising capital by either Angel Investors or Venture Capitalists? When does something shiney and new become pointless? Would a Scottish exchange be any different?
What we love about government is their nimble approach to life in general. Apart from natural disasters it seems that Westminster and Whitehall is about as quick to move as a pair of racing grannies. In June this year the Department for Business Innovation and Skills released a report in the Angel Market in the United Kingdom …. for 2008 / 2009 (pdf). Our industry changes by the week, let a lone a year. During the period of which the data relates we’ve completley changed our business model and expanded into Asia. That being said, there is a wonderful amount of information avaliable in the document and should be studied closely by anyone interested in the industry.
